The New England Division of the Army Corps of Engineers built, maintains and operates the Flood Control Dams situated on the Connecticut River and Local Protection Projects located in various cities. The Flood Control Commission determines tax losses to those towns that have flood control dams in their towns. The Commission stays on top of issues affecting the Local Protection Projects such as the inspections done by the Corps of Engineers.

The dams that the Commission focuses on include Knightville, Littleville, Birch Hill and Tully in Massachusetts, Otter Brook and Surry Mountain in New Hampshire, Union Village, North Hartland, North Springfield, Townshend and Ball Mountain in Vermont. On the map below, these dams are printed in black. Many of them have recreational facilities.

The Local Protection Projects, a series of dikes and pumping stations to prevent flood damage to cities, are located at Westfield, Chicopee, Northampton, Holyoke, Springfield and West Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford and East Hartford, CT.
